GDOT Reports Progress on Icy Roadways
It was only a few inches of snow, but it led to miles of agony.
Thousands of commuters in metro Atlanta were stranded in their vehicles since Tuesday, trapped in place by icy roadways.
However, the Georgia Department of Transportation says progress is being made.
“Our pre-treatment, we felt, was spot on for the situation. However this situation quickly unraveled, given many challenges we didn’t expect to have to deal with,” says GDOT spokeswoman Natalie Dale.

One of those difficulties was that GDOT crews had trouble getting through the same congestion as everyone else.
That prevented some roads from being properly treated, which led to more accidents and spin-outs, which led to more traffic.
One major hurdle cleared Wednesday was the re-opening of a ramp on I-20, just south of the city.
But, despite this progress, Dale says people should enjoy a snow-day from work and school.
“As we said Monday, if you can stay home, stay home. If you are home, do not get on our roads,” said Dale.
State officials confirm nearly 1,000 accidents were reported throughout Wednesday morning.
