Storm Could Bring Ice, Power Blackouts; Georgia Power Says It’s Ready

On January 28 and 29, 2014, metro Atlanta took a hit from a snowstorm that caused roads to ice up, stranding people in their cars–some of them for over a day.  But the next winter waves, on February 11 and 12, could cause even more problems; because this time, the ice could form on tree limbs and power lines.  If large numbers of them fall under the weight of the ice, many people will be without electricity in the cold, and the blackouts could last for a couple of days.  At least, that’s the worst case prediction from weather forecasters.  WABE’s Denis O’Hayer spoke with Keith Stellman, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City, and with Carol Boatright, a spokeswoman for Georgia Power, the state’s largest electric utility.Broadcast VersionExpanded Version
