Smyrna Considers Banning Tobacco from Parks
The Smyrna City Council is considering a draft ordinance that calls for banning smoking in area parks.
The idea first came after a number of residents complained about second-hand smoke from cigars and cigarettes.
“Several areas in the metro Atlanta area have already banned smoking and the use of tobacco products in their parks, so Smyrna is not re-inventing the wheel by discussing this ordinance,” says councilwoman Teri Anulewicz.
Atlanta, Alpharetta, Duluth and Norcross have all passed similar legislation.
The ordinance in Smyrna is not a city-wide ban, like the one that recently failed in Kennesaw. It would just prevent people from puffing in parks.

Tobacco use is already prohibited during government events in Smyrna parks, like the popular Food Truck Tuesdays.
“But, that does not include Little League baseball games or soccer games, because those are not city events. Those are actually run by private organizations, but they’re still using our park system,” says city administrator Eric Taylor.
There’s no set deadline for a decision, but officials say they hope to have a final decision before summer, when more people will be heading to their parks.
