Tucker Still Pushing for Cityhood Vote

People pushing for Tucker cityhood are still hoping to get the question on a referendum ballot this year.Broadcast Version

Frank Auman, with the pro-cityhood group Tucker 2014, spent the last few days with lawmakers and Lakeside cityhood proponents, drawing a map for the two potential new cities.

“I think we’re going to find that there’s a way to get it done legally and have it get out of the General Assembly,” said Auman. He says he is confident about Tucker’s chances because he has gotten assurances from State Sen. Fran Millar (R-Dunwoody), the sponsor of the Lakeside bill. It is the only DeKalb County cityhood bill still in play by the rules of the Georgia General Assembly’s “cross-over day,” the day a bill must pass out of its originating chamber.

State Sen. Steve Henson (D-Tucker) thinks Auman’s confidence is misplaced. “There are, I think, are a lot of misconceptions about what you can do and what’s legal and proper to do,” said Henson.

He also says he will vote against any bill including Tucker that might come to the Senate floor this legislative session, saying, “The big problem here is the process has been so flawed that the communities haven’t been involved and that they’re trying to run this thing through at the last minute where there’s no need.”

Sen. Millar the speed of the efforts’ progress right now is not an issue because the public will have plenty of time to study the maps once the bill becomes law but before the proposals go to referendum.
