Lawmakers Move to Eliminate Summer Unemployment for Contracted School Workers
Workers who are privately contracted to schools will no longer be able to collect unemployment during the summer if Gov. Nathan Deal signs a bill passed by the General Assembly Thursday.Broadcast Version
Bus drivers, lunchroom staff, and other workers who do not work directly for school systems often find themselves in the unemployment line during the summer — sometimes with a wink and a nod from their private employers — who hire them back when school starts again.
However, if the governor signs the new bill, they will not be able to collect unemployment.
Georgia AFL-CIO president Charlie Flemming called passage of the measure a blow to the workers. “They deserved a better fate,” Flemming told WABE. “They’ve done everything they were asked to do. They played by the rules. They took care of our kids. And now they’ll probably be looking for another job.”
The AFL-CIO estimates the measure could affect up to 60,000 workers statewide.
