Native Plants For Sale, Many Rescued In The Wild

Twice each year, the Georgia Native Plant Society (GNPS) holds one of the more unusual plant sales in the Atlanta area: they sell only plants that are native to the state of Georgia, many of which were rescued in the wild by GNPS members.

GNPS volunteers go to construction sites in north and central Georgia to save native plants that are in the direct path of new development.  These rescues are always done with permission of and support from the developers and land owners.

GNPS reports that it conducted a total of 74 plant rescues last year, saving hundreds if not thousands of native azaleas, ferns, trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses and other plants.

Many of these rescued plants, which are typically not found in commercial nurseries, are given to schools, nature centers, parks and public gardens — and some are sold to raise money to support their rescue and education programs.

This year’s GNPS spring sale was held Saturday, April 12, at McFarlane Nature Park in Cobb County.  It was a beautiful place on a beautiful spring day, and we took along a camera.
