Work Begins Next Year on Windy Hill Diverging Diamond

By the time the Atlanta Braves take up residence in Cobb County, you will see a big change at one of the county’s worst intersections.Broadcast Version

Windy Hill Road at I-75 is notorious for its traffic. At times, it has been ranked as the most dangerous intersection in Cobb County.

Transportation officials will start work next year on a diverging diamond interchange. Jim Wilgus, Deputy Director of the Cobb Department of Transportation, says improving the interchange has been in the planning stages for years.

“On Windy Hill Road itself, we’ll have three lanes in each direction plus a median,” says Wilgus. “Once you get to the diverging diamond, what we’ve got then are three lanes, either direction, but they reverse on the bridge, and it makes the turning movements – particularly onto the interstate — much easier.”

The project will cost $17.8 million. It should be complete by the end of 2016, which will be just a few months ahead of the Braves’ first season in Cobb County.
