GSU And WRAS Hold Talks Over Planned Programming Change
The two sides in the battle over programming at Georgia State University’s radio station are now talking, but there is no evidence of any movement on either side.
GSU President Mark Becker and other administration officials met for about 45 minutes this morning, behind closed doors, with student leaders of campus radio station WRAS.
GSU has signed a contract with Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) to air its programming ten hours a day instead of the current student-run programming.
The students presented a strategic plan that does not include GPB. Ana Zimitravich, the station’s outgoing general manager, called the meeting “respectful and productive,” but said, “Our main goal is still going to be to have our programming remain the way it is now. That’s the plan we went into this with. That’s what we presented, so we’re not gonna give up on that.”
GSU Vice President for Student Affairs Douglass Covey was also in today’s meeting. In a later interview with WABE, Covey said, “The University is going to honor our contractual obligations with GPB. That’s a given.”
The two sides did agree to keep communication open, though they did not set a date to meet again.
Two notes of disclosure:
- Douglass Covey is a former member of the board of directors of WABE’s parent organization.
- WABE is not affiliated with Georgia Public Broadcasting.
