Metro Atlanta Apple employees are pushing to unionize.

In April, employees at the Apple store in Cumberland Mall filed a request to hold a union election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Reports suggest the workers are calling for several changes, including stronger COVID-19 safety measures in stores, fair compensation and a commitment to promoting more BIPOC employees into leadership roles.

On Thursday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Ed Barlow, the president of Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 3204, told program host Rose Scott that employees are set to vote in favor or against the forming of the first unionized Apple retail location June 2-4.

In response, Apple released the following statement to the ”Closer Look” team, “We are fortunate to have incredible retail team members and we deeply value everything they bring to Apple. We are pleased to offer very strong compensation and benefits for full-time and part-time employees, including health care, tuition reimbursement, new parental leave, paid family leave, annual stock grants and many other benefits.”

Cumberland Mall workers’ push for unionization sparked Apple workers from across the nation to file a petition with NLRB — all while Starbucks and Amazon employees are also pushing to unionize.
