DOJ: Oath Keeper's 'death list' targeted Georgia elections official

Federal prosecutors on Friday released new details about several Oath Keepers charged with seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, saying one co-defendant kept a ”death list” that included the name of a Georgia elections official and their family member.

The Justice Department cited the list in a previous filing in Feb. 2021, but did not reveal that it included a Georgia official until Friday.

Law enforcement searched the Virginia home of Thomas Caldwell on Jan. 19, 2021, according to the filing.

“From the search, law enforcement recovered a document that included the words ‘DEATH LIST’ hand-written across the top with the name of a Georgia election official, a purported family member of that official, and the county and state associated with that official all hand-written underneath,” it said.

Prosecutors did not name the official or their family member, but said they “became the target of unfounded conspiracy theories that they were involved in voter fraud” following the 2020 election.

“That Caldwell made and kept a ‘death list’ that includes officials involved in the presidential election process — contemporaneous with his preparation to travel to Washington, D.C. — illustrates his actions during the alleged conspiracy and intent to oppose by force the transfer of power,” the filing said.

Caldwell told CNN that “the DOJ’s claim that I sought to assassinate election workers is a 100% false and disgusting lie.”

The filing — which previews evidence to be presented at trial in September — also said that an unindicted co-conspirator named Jeremy Brown carried explosives to the Washington, D.C., area ahead of the Jan. 6 attack.
