Georgia’s Old Capital Museum in Milledgeville is hosting a new exhibit to commemorate the time in 1825 when a Revolutionary War hero visited the city.
Marquis de Lafayette was hailed as an international celebrity nearly two centuries ago, during a nationwide farewell tour at the invitation of President James Monroe.
While in Georgia, he visited Savannah, where he was welcomed by Gov. George Troup before traveling to Augusta, Warrenton, Sparta and the state capital of Milledgeville.
The Macon Telegraph reports that he left Milledgeville on March 29, 1825, to head to Macon and then Fort Mitchell, Alabama.
