On this edition of Closer Look, Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring discussed the district’s preparation for the upcoming school year.

The district, which has centralized infection data analysis, has elected to continue to follow CDC guidelines as a metric for its precautions. Masking requirements for the district will be optional for both students and employees.

While the district will continue to provide COVID-19 testing twice a week for registered students as it has since 2021, Dr. Herring emphasized the district’s preparedness to pivot to virtual learning in schools if needed.

In light of disrupted learning from the pandemic and its impact on accelerated progress, the district’s Summer Academic Recovery Academy is set to continue next summer. The district board is also approaching a vote to provide telehealth counseling for students in its system. Accommodations for students based upon individual needs will be a major focus of the academic year.

The district has also directed increased attention to safety and security, and has begun conducting active shooter training and maintaining metal detectors in all high schools.

“Safety and security is what allows us to do our core business, teaching and learning. That’s a priority,” Dr. Herring said.
