Sam Crenshaw talks Atlanta sports and more with “A Closer Look” hosts Rose Scott and Denis O'Hayer.
The Atlanta Hawks continue their second-round NBA playoff series Saturday as a new ownership group settles in.
That was among the topics discussed on “A Closer Look” Friday with Fox 5 contributor and Atlanta sports personality Sam Crenshaw.
The Hawks are tied 1-1 with the Washington Wizards, who may be playing without All-Star guard John Wall. Wall has five fractures in his left hand and wrist from an injury in Game 1.
Crenshaw told hosts Rose Scott and Denis O’Hayer that he still thinks the Hawks will win in six games, regardless of Wall’s status.
A new Hawks ownership group, led by private equity billionaire Antony Ressler, will have some big decisions to make about the team off the court.
That includes hiring a new general manager or retaining Danny Ferry – whose racially charged e-mails led to him taking a leave of absence as the ownership change was underway.
Among the new Hawks co-owners is Grant Hill, a former NBA player who, like Ferry, played college basketball at Duke.
Player moves in the summer also will be important for the Hawks to remain in the NBA’s elite. While players elsewhere “will be knocking down the door to play here,” according to Crenshaw, keeping free agent DeMarre Carroll in a Hawks uniform will be a priority
Carroll has scored at least 20 points in each of the last six Hawks playoff games.
“He wasn’t an All-Star, but he’s the guy who’s been carrying them,” Crenshaw said.
Crenshaw also gave the Atlanta Falcons a score of “A minus” in the recent NFL draft, talked about the possibility of horse racing in Georgia and last weekend’s welterweight fight won by Floyd Mayweather over Manny Pacquiao.
“If that’s the best that boxing has to offer, then I really feel bad for a sport I grew up loving,” Crenshaw said.
