‘Still thriving’: Sheryl Lee Ralph on activism and the thrill of Broadway

Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, now an Emmy award winner, visited WABE’s studios in 2019 for an interview with “Closer Look.”

“This is what striving looks like! And don’t you ever, ever give up on you!”

Actress and Broadway star Sheryl Lee Ralph called out to a crowd to never give up on their dreams as she picked up her first Emmy in a decades-long career.

Ralph was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her performance as a kindergarten teacher in “Abbott Elementary,” a mockumentary sitcom about teachers at a public school in Philadelphia.

On this edition of “Closer Look,” we revisit a 2019 interview with the “Dreamgirls” star talking about the thrills of performing in front of a live audience, why she’s okay with being known as a diva, and finding career stability in the entertainment industry.

“Probably, if I was given one thing different, I wouldn’t be where I am,” Ralph said. “Right here, right now. Still thriving, still moving forward with new things on my horizon.”
