As Georgia grows as a film hub, universities and colleges in the state are looking to create or expand their film programs.

Georgia State University is starting a new degree program that will help students find jobs in the film industry, and last month, SCAD announced that it was adding film and TV to its bachelor’s degree in fine art program on its Atlanta campus.

“What you are seeing is a school with several locations responding to the fact that Atlanta is growing so much in the media landscape,” said Shawn Kasinger, SCAD Atlanta’s chair of television and film.

In Gov. Nathan Deal’s “Governor’s High Demand Career Initiative Report,” it emphasizes that Georgia needs more skilled animators and more skilled film laborers overall. It noted how bigger productions will not generally hire laborers who are not in the film union due to safety and skill concerns.

Kasinger said that the SCAD program intends to provide students with skills to work on these bigger productions but also hopes to prepare students to be entrepreneurs on their own projects.

“What we want in the long term is not just below-the-line crew, people who are just servicing outside productions,” he said. “We want people to be content creators.”

The film and TV bachelor’s degree program will be offered starting this fall.
