“It’s time for accountability in Washington because the hard truth is, they’ve lost our trust,” Barksdale said in a press release announcing his candidacy. “Building my company, we always kept at the top of our minds that we were protecting people’s retirement, their children’s education and their opportunities to act on their dreams. We need this same stewardship in the U.S. Senate on national security and economic opportunity for all.”

Barksdale has the support of the Georgia Democratic party including its chair Dubose Porter, as well as Georgia House Minority Leader Stacy Abrams, and Jason Carter, who were both considered potential Democratic Senate candidates, and accompanied Barksdale to the Capitol Thursday where he signed up for the race.

Party leaders say he has the best chance to defeat Isakson in the general election.

But Barksdale, does face a number of other challengers in the primary including Cheryl Copeland of Hiram, Ga., James Knox, a retired military veteran, and John Coyne of Alpharetta who’s in the real estate business.
