Janai Nelson, the president and director-counsel of the Legal Defense Fund, says her organization and several other legacy civil rights organization were deeply alarmed and disgusted by the vicious killing of Tyre Nichols.

“We are at the point where we are demanding real and robust action,” said Nelson on Wednesday’s edition of “Closer Look.”

Nelson further spoke about over-policing, what needs to be done to make sure communities are safe, and the importance of redirecting police funding.

“The current system of law enforcement and public safety that we have is flawed and it really needs an entirely different framework—and it needs to be reinvented because it has not been serving us well,” Nelson.

During the conversation, Nelson also offered remarks about Biden’s State of the Union Address and a letter that LFD and other civil rights groups sent to Biden ahead of his address.
