Spelman student wins Target’s HBCU Design Challenge, T-shirt design being featured for Black History Month

Cadence Patrick, a sophomore computer science major at Spelman College, says she applied to Target HBCU Design Challenge in hopes of spreading a positive message to the world.

Patrick is one of three HBCU students whose T-shirt designs are being showcased and sold at Target for its Black Beyond Measure campaign for Black History Month.

On Friday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Patrick told show host Rose Scott that her T-shirt design was inspired by her sibling.  



“My design is titled ‘Black Futures Are Bright,’ and it depicts my younger brother— he’s the subject of it, basically holding this ball of light that says ‘Black Futures Are Bright,” explained Patrick.

During the conversation, Patrick was joined by Pamela Krominga, the director of Multicultural Merchandising at Target. Krominga talked about Target’s commitment to celebrating Black entrepreneurs and efforts to invest $2.5  billion in black-owned businesses by 2025.
