A nine-acre park over a traffic-clogged highway may sound far-fetched, but in Buckhead it’s getting closer to becoming a reality.
The Buckhead Community Improvement District first floated a proposal to put a greenspace over Georgia-400 a year and a half ago.
Now, after going through designs and meeting with the public, the group voted Wednesday to move the idea forward.
CID Executive Director Jim Durrett said that means they’ll be addressing the question on a lot of people’s minds: Can the park be paid for?
“Now we need to see if we can develop a funding model that is feasible and fair,” Durrett said.
Currently, the park is projected to cost between $195 million and $245 million.
To cover that, his group is looking at a variety of sources, including local dollars, federal grants and private sponsorship.
Durrett said the park is sorely needed in the area — between the Buckhead and Lenox MARTA stations.
“Think about, where does the community gather, what makes this a complete community,” Durrett said. “It’s missing that piece.”
He expects they’ll determine whether the project is truly feasible in about six months.
