County and Atlanta health officials celebrated Monday at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the recent opening of a new facility on the Grady Memorial Hospital campus.

The 10-story, $237 million Correll Pavilion offers outpatient care once offered at Grady’s main building, including outpatient surgeries, cancer treatment, rehabilitation and orthopedics, ophthalmology, oral surgery and other specialty health services.

Relocating the outpatient services to the new facility has opened up needed capacity at Grady’s main hospital.

Officials say it’s increased the hospital’s clinical capacity by 45% and operating room volume by 25%.

The Level 1 trauma center is closest to the site of Wellstar Health System’s Atlanta Medical Center, which shut down in November.

Grady has since absorbed a chunk of new patients who formerly sought care at AMC, as well as at Wellstar’s East Point hospital, which also shut down last spring.

The new outpatient building was planned long before the two Wellstar hospitals closed in 2022. But Grady officials say the closures slightly accelerated its timeline.

The new facility is named for A.D. “Pete” Correll, former chairman emeritus of Georgia-Pacific and former chair of both the Grady Memorial Hospital Corporation and Grady Health Foundation boards of directors.

Correll died in 2021.

“We are thrilled to see our vision for this beautiful new outpatient facility become a reality,” said Shannon Sale, Grady’s chief strategy officer. “We are grateful for the support of the philanthropic community and Fulton and DeKalb counties in making it possible for Grady to take the next step toward ensuring the Atlanta community continues to have access to the best possible care and cutting-edge technology that will help save lives.”

Over the next year, Grady officials say they’ll continue to revamp space at the main hospital and add another approximately 200 beds.

Fulton County Board of Commissioners Chairman Robb Pitts, and DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond attended Monday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Last week, officials from both counties joined a group of Democratic General Assembly lawmakers in filing two federal complaints related to Wellstar’s decision to shutter the AMC-Main and AMC-South hospitals.

The coalition is seeking two federal investigations into the closures — one by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights, the other by the Internal Revenue Service.
