The Georgia Museum of Art’s new exhibition, “Art is a Form of Freedom,” is a collaborative project with Common Good Atlanta, a nonprofit organization that provides both incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people with access to higher education.
Works of art from the museum’s collection were brought into classrooms at Whitworth Women’s Facility, a prison in North Georgia. Then the incarcerated women selected the works of art for the exhibit and wrote both prose and poems in relation to the pieces.
In this interview, “City Lights” producer Summer Evans spoke with Caroline Young, site director of Common Good Atlanta and Callan Steinmann, curator of education at Georgia Museum of Art, about the exhibit.
