The University of Georgia is not getting a new stadium, but it may just be the next best thing.
On Tuesday, Georgia’s athletic board of directors gave the nod to a $63 million project for Sanford Stadium.
“The presidents of these schools realize what football and the success of the football can mean in more than just dollars. I mean, it means better kids, it means your alumni comes,” said I.J. Rosenberg, the president of Score Atlanta, a sports marketing company.
The plan includes giving the Bulldogs a new and bigger locker room, adding restrooms and concession stands as well as a new plaza.
“You know, a lot of people say, ‘I don’t understand why you’ve got to spend another $60 million on the stadium, but you know, a lot of times that can lead to a lot more for the entire school,” said Rosenberg.
Officials say work is expected to start in April and will likely take nearly a year-and-a-half to complete.
Sanford Stadium debuted in 1929 and can hold nearly 93,000 people.
