#1. On Wednesday, three organizers from which Atlanta-based organization were arrested on charges of money laundering and fraud?
It’s the Atlanta Solidarity Fund.
The three Atlanta organizers arrested have been aiding protesters against the city’s proposed police and fire training center, striking at the structure that supports the fight against what opponents derisively call “Cop City.”
Charged with money laundering and charity fraud are Marlon Scott Kautz, 39, of Atlanta; Savannah D. Patterson, 30, of Savannah; and Adele MacLean, 42, of Atlanta.
#2. What is the mission of the grassroots organization Asian American Voices for Education, or AAVEd?
It’s to diversify lessons designed under Georgia’s educational standards to improve representation.
The group said AAVEd’s lesson plans look at all cultures, abilities and gender expressions. And they’ve given out nearly 300 heritage learning kits to parents this year, with much of the material being taught in the classroom.
#3. June 1 marked the beginning of which national human rights based celebration?
It’s Pride Month.
Since 1970, Pride has been a season to celebrate the lives and experiences of LGBTQ communities and to protest against recent attacks on hard-won civil rights gains.
This year’s Pride takes place in a contentious political climate in which some state legislators have sought to ban drag shows, prohibit gender-affirming care and limit how teachers can talk about sexuality and gender in the classroom.
#4. This year, Georgia farmers are struggling to grow this state-famous crop.
It’s Peaches.
Horticulturists at the University of Georgia say roughly 90% of the Peach State’s crop has been destroyed by bad weather and a warming climate.
Peaches require a minimum number of chill hours, below 45 degrees, to set fruit. But the first three months of this year were the warmest on record in Georgia, and chill hours here have been declining over the years. That’s due to climate change.
