On the “City Lights” series “Speaking of Art,” local artists share insights into their influences, processes and experiences in town. This edition focuses on Atlanta fiber artist, natural dyer, researcher and environmentalist Jamie Bourgeois.
“I create naturally dyed and printed textiles as well as mixed media artwork using plant dyes, minerals, natural fibers and found objects like discarded plastics,” Bourgeois says.
Bourgeois’ studio practice is slow and research-heavy, involving many processes of plant dyes, print pastes, screen printing, hand-sewing, beading and embroidery.
“The goal of my work is to spread seeds of information about the environment to bring awareness and alarm to the systems and many ways we are polluting and debilitating our eco-systems,” Bourgeois said. “My illustrations, writings and research projects urge and hopefully inspire people to fight for the health of their local environments wherever they are…”
