On the “City Lights” series “Speaking of Poetry,” Atlanta’s most prolific wordsmiths discuss the art of evoking emotions with words. This edition of “Speaking of Poetry” features poet SinsEar. “I am a full-time creative, and I do that in the way of poetry,” SinsEar says. SinsEar describes his style as being about life and the emergence of perspective from life.

SinsEar started off as a visual artist- a sketch artist and a painter and that morphed as he got into his teenage years and learned that Tupac was a poet. So his entry into the world of poetry came through Hip-Hop. “So I got into poetry and understanding that there was the deeper level of expression to where your voice becomes the music, and then you can add anything to it from that,” he said.

In this segment, SinsEar shares an excerpt from a poem titled “The Excuse.”

There’s things in life that make us different

You see it’s from the darkness of some or even the lightest pigment

You know, melanin is often the root of evil some think

Disguised by dollar signs we use pride to create separation

And with no reparation, the foundation of a nation was built

More progress came more excuses waiting for a lighter pigment’s expression of guilt
