A new future is in the works for the historic Mall West End.

Over the years, several developers have shown interest in transforming the property nestled in the heart of Atlanta’s West End neighborhood. Most recently, The Mall West End was in negotiations for redevelopment with New York City-based Prusik Group. The proposed project gained the support of some local neighbors.

During an exclusive interview on Tuesday’s edition of WABE’s “Closer Look,” Charles Taylor, a board member of the WABE Foundation and a principal owner of H.T. West End LLC — the ownership group of The Mall West End — told program host Rose Scott that the Prusik Group recently sent a letter terminating their contract to develop the 1.4 million-square-foot property that sits on a 12.5-acre site.

“It’s just a difficult time,” said Taylor. “They told me one thing; they were trying to work something out with the city. That told me they were not able to work something out with the city. That’s all I know.”

Tayor says terminating the contract left the mall in a “less strong” position because several stores closed without renewing their leases due to the proposed plans to tear down the mall.

“We have taken the property off the market,” said Taylor. “It is no longer actively being marketed for sale.”

Taylor also discussed how H.T. West End LLC is working to lease the building to small business owners and re-energize and re-focus the mall.

“We would like it to be a much more community-focused kind of mall,” explained Taylor.
