At least 18 people are dead, and 13 others are injured following two shootings in Maine on Wednesday night. Authorities are searching for the shooting suspect, Robert Card, 40.
On Thursday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Dr. Sharven Taghavi, the director of Acute Care Surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine, reflects on the Maine shootings and discusses his research that links structural racism and mass shootings.
The study looked at hundreds of mass shootings between the years 2015 and 2019 in major metropolitan areas such as Atlanta. Among the factors that were studied were segregation, poverty, housing practices, education and crime rates.
