The Hindu holiday of Diwali begins today! The 5-day festival is celebrated worldwide to honor the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
In this feature, managing producer Kim Drobes spoke with Dunwoody resident Devika Rao and Midtown resident Meghna Nagarajan about their favorite Diwali foods and what the holiday means to them.
“At nighttime, everybody in the neighborhood will come out and play with fireworks,” Nagarajan says. Fireworks have been her favorite part of the Diwali holiday since she was a child.
Sharing food with loved ones, especially sweets, is a big part of the holiday. Exchanging sweets is a way to welcome the new year.
Diwali is a “reset” that encourages participants to intentionally invite light and love into their lives.
