The great jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald once said, “I always try to tell a story and sing only what I have experienced…And I try to bring the story that I sing to life because I believe that music is a narrative art.”

Fitzgerald’s artistry is at the heart of “Becoming Ella,” a new biography by professor Judith Tick that chronicles the life and career of Ella Fitzgerald.

In this interview, Tick joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to speak more about the biography.
