Former Mayor Sam Massell and Mayor Bottoms On Buckhead De-Annexation

Any plans for a new city of Buckhead have a fundamental problem: there’s already a Buckhead, Georgia, near Lake Oconee.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms answered a question from former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell Monday. The topic? The idea of Buckhead separating itself from the City of Atlanta.

Gov. Nathan Deal recently signed a bill into law that allows part of the city of Stockbridge to vote to de-annex itself and become part of a new city: Eagles Landing.

At a Buckhead Rotary meeting Monday, former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell said the new law has sparked discussion, again, about Buckhead separating itself from the City of Atlanta.

The man often called “the Mayor of Buckhead” asked Bottoms what she thought of the idea during her speech at the meeting.

“It really would be devastating to the City of Atlanta and also not in the best interest of Buckhead,” she said. “Atlanta has succeeded because we have succeeded together.”

Massell also said the idea would be devastating and that it would hurt Buckhead.

Regardless of popular support, any plans for a new city of Buckhead have a fundamental problem: there’s already a Buckhead, Georgia, near Lake Oconee.
