Walmart announced Tuesday that it is shutting down all 51 of its in-store health centers across five states — 17 of which are located in Georgia.

The company said it determined that the health centers and its virtual care services — which are also ending — are no longer financially sustainable to justify their continuation.

“We understand this change affects lives — the patients who receive care, the associates and providers who deliver care and the communities who supported us along the way,” said the company in a press release.

“This is a difficult decision, and like others, the challenging reimbursement environment and escalating operating costs create a lack of profitability that make the care business unsustainable for us at this time,” they added.

Walmart launched the health centers in 2019 to provide more health resources to customers.

In Georgia, the 17 closing locations are as follows:

The company noted that its over 4,500 pharmacies and 3,000 vision centers nationwide will remain open.

Employees affected by the closings will be eligible for transfer to other Walmart or Sam’s Club locations. They will receive 90 days’ pay unless they transfer to a different location or leave the company during that time. They will receive severance benefits if they do not transfer or leave the company after 90 days, according to the press release.
