The City of Atlanta has officially announced its support to bring the Sundance Film Festival over to the “Hollywood of the South.”

On Monday, the City confirmed its filing for a request for proposal to host the prestigious festival beginning in 2027.

In addition, the City and its partners have pledged a $2 million donation, as well as “an array of concessions and in-kind support to the festival,” according to a recent press release.

“We are honored that Atlanta is being considered as a potential host for the Sundance Film Festival in 2027 and beyond. Atlanta is where the worlds of film, entertainment, economic development, diversity and inclusion meet and grow cohesively, together,” said Mayor Andre Dickens. “We’re ready to show the Sundance Institute that Atlanta is the place where opportunities are endless, and Sundance can continue to shine.”

The press release also noted that Atlanta’s request for proposal submission highlights the various benefits the city can offer, including “diverse neighborhoods, status as a film production hub, cultural centers, event capabilities, commitment to climate action, ease of transportation, hospitality industry and inclusive and equitable business environment.”

The proposal was prepared by the City in collaboration with the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Atlanta is one of three Georgia cities, along with Savannah and Athens, that are in the running to take over the hosting duties for the festival, which is transitioning away from its home location in Park City, Utah after over 40 years.

Sundance has become well known as a hub for premiering films that have grown to become part of the fabric of U.S. cinema, including the Georgia-produced films “The Birth of a Nation,” “The Fundamentals of Caring,” and “Alice.”

The three Georgia cities are among 15 nationwide that were required to submit their proposals to the organization by June 21.

After reviewing prospective locations, board members are expected to make a formal decision for a host city anywhere from later this year to early 2025.
