One of Atlanta’s most historic shopping destinations has been sold. The City of Atlanta announced the acquisition of the Mall West End Tuesday.

The mall, located in Atlanta’s West End neighborhood, opened in 1972. It has remained a long-standing cultural staple in the community. According to a press release from the City of Atlanta, the sale was made possible through a partnership between Atlanta Urban Development and Atlanta Beltline, Inc. Plans for the 12-acre site include a mixed-income, mixed-use affordable housing development, student-targeted housing, a 150-key hotel, 12,000 square feet of medical office space, a fitness center and more. The roughly $450 million redevelopment project will be led by the Prusik Group and BRP Companies.

On Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” show host Rose Scott talked with Charles Taylor, a board member of the WABE Foundation and a principal owner of H.T. West End LLC, and developers Andrew Katz with the Prusik Group and Meredith Marshall with BRP Companies. They talked about the sale and what it means for the future of the shopping destination. They also stressed the importance of keeping current mall tenants and putting the community first in the redevelopment project.
