#1. A recent chemical plant fire took place in which Georgia city?

It’s Conyers.

On Sunday, a BioLab chemical plant in Conyers caught fire, and the small fire on the roof caused the sprinkler system to malfunction, dousing the water-reactive chemicals inside the building. Rockdale County issued several shelter-in-place orders, and nearby residents there and in metro Atlanta reported smelling chlorine in the air and experiencing symptoms.

Several lawmakers and advocates held a press conference Thursday to demand that Georgia shut down the Conyers BioLab facility, citing the business’ track record of breaking environmental regulations.

#2. The coach of which Atlanta team was fired this week?

It’s the Dream.

The Atlanta Dream fired coach Tanisha Wright after three seasons. The team reached the playoffs in the last two seasons, and it lost in the opening round of the postseason both years.

The Dream is beginning to look for a new coach immediately.

#3. What aid has the federal government given to Georgia following the aftermath of Hurricane Helene?

It’s all of the above.

President Joe Biden approved Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp’s request to declare a major disaster for 41 counties in the state. The declaration allows residents of those counties to apply for FEMA disaster assistance to pay for home repairs, food, temporary housing and more.

During a Thursday trip to Ray City, Georgia, Biden said that Department of Agriculture workers will work with small farmers and producers to help them recover their losses from Helene.

A day earlier, Vice President Kamala Harris also visited Georgia, announcing in Augusta that the federal government would reimburse 100% of costs incurred by local governments and agencies in recovering from the storm.

It’s been declared unconstitutional.

Fulton Superior Judge Robert McBurney struck down Georgia’s six-week abortion law, declaring that it violated the Georgia Constitution’s protections for individual liberty by denying women the ability to control their own bodies. Georgia’s previous abortion law, which permits abortions up until the time of fetal viability, has been reinstated.

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has appealed the decision by McBurney and has asked the Georgia Supreme Court to weigh in.
