An expedition through the outermost creative possibilities of wood greets visitors to the Mable House Arts Center in Mableton through Nov. 15.

Master woodworker Doug Pisik showcases a collection of sculptures and crafts that suggest connections to biology, music, and emotion through surprising achievements in 3D geometry. Doug Pisik joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes via Riverside to discuss his craft and the works on view for this exhibition at Mable House.

When asked about why he chose wood as his medium for expression, Pisik explained to Reitzes that “the wood itself is just so tactile.”

“There’s so many different species with different colors and textures and grain patterns, and just be able to carve into it and shape it and fit it together, I find fascinating and invigorating in a lot of ways,” he said.

His collection at the Mable House Arts Center will feature a series of boxes and sculptures created over the last couple of years, many of which fully display his woodworking prowess.

“I tend to be drawn more… to the contemporary pieces, more geometric shapes and such,” says Pisik, despite the classic methods behind his creations. “Behind the scenes, the joinery, the way the wood is cut, the way it’s fit together and locks together in such a way that it will last for generations to come. Those traditional woodworking styles are always with me and always come into play.”
