Lana Michele Moorer, better known by her stage name MC Lyte, understands the power of music and words. For more than three decades, the hip-hop pioneering emcee, actress, and philanthropist has remained a cultural icon — building a legacy in what was once a male-dominated industry.

She made history in 1988 when she became the first female rapper to drop a full-length album. It was titled “Lyte As A Rock.” The rest is history. Eight albums later, MC Lyte is back with new words of wisdom, talking about the topics that she says are important to her in her latest release, “1 of 1.”

On Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” the Grammy-nominated artist made her second appearance on the program. During the interview, MC Lyte reflected on her journey, from dropping her first album at the age of 18 to navigating her uncharted path in the music industry. She also explained how her music has changed as she has gained more awareness and boldness.
