Spelman musical showcase ‘Sankofunktopia’ inspired by Funk singer George Clinton
Spelman College freshman Maddison Gardner says her generation has an ear for soul-serving music. Gardner, who is studying psychology and theater, grew up listening to music. She says she loves funk and can recognize it in the music of today.
Gardener and Aku Kadogo, a senior lecturer for the Department of Theater and Performance at Spelman College, are working together to put on a musical showcase called “Sankofunktopia.” They were guests on Friday’s edition of “Closer Look.” They talked with host Rose Scott about the performance inspired by George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic’s album, “Funkentelechy vs The Placebo Syndrome.”
The musical performance is slated for Nov. 7 to Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. and again on Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Baldwin Burroughs Theatre. Event attendees are encouraged to dress in funk-inspired attire.
