Chef Deborah VanTrece is already a star in Southern culinary arts. Her VanTrece Hospitality Group operates several Atlanta eateries, including Twisted Soul Cookhouse and Pours, and her most recent new restaurant Serenidad. Now, the chef fulfills another dream of becoming a TV cooking star with her new show, “Global Soul Kitchen,” featured on the FYI Network.

“Global Soul Kitchen,” hosted by chef Deborah herself, spotlights dishes she’s developed over her many years studying food traditions worldwide while always bringing it home to her Southern roots.

Deborah Van Trece recently joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to talk about her latest adventure cooking in front of the camera.

When asked about the content of her newest adventure, VanTrece explained some of her process for coming up with new recipes, pointing out that it involves much more than just tossing good-tasting ingredients together.

“I think that [exploring] history… is a real big part of what I wanted to accomplish with this show,” she said. “I wanted people to understand a little bit how my mind works.”

History and the context of the ingredients play a large role in her cooking practice, and each dish that she creates is crafted with thoughtfulness and intention.

“It’s not just because I thought this would taste good. It was something about it reminded me of something I already knew or something I grew up with. And sometimes when I’m trying to introduce new flavors, new techniques, new dishes, it’s easier for people to relate to that if you can explain to them… the history behind it.”
