Holiday cheer, ugly sweaters and chestnuts roasting all have their place. But Out Front Theatre Company has decided to go off the rails this season with a hilarious new holiday play by Ryan Landry and the Gold Dust Orphans.

“Murder on the Polar Express” mashes up the best of Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes and high-camp drag in a nutty adventure with “The World’s Foremost Drag Detective,” Shirley Holmes.

The show is on stage at Out Front Theatre through Dec. 22. “City Lights” producer Summer Evans spoke with playwright Ryan Landry and director Paul Conroy about the comedic drama.

Ryan Landry, known for his maximalist approach to theater, shared his philosophy of bringing laughter to audiences. “I want people to forget their troubles for an hour and a half,” he said.

Landry’s blend of absurdity and heart is brought to life under the direction of Paul Conroy, who praised the show’s mix of high camp and ensemble storytelling, “ What I love about the show is that it’s written in such a way that it really is an ensemble that every single person gets to shine [in].”

With outrageous costumes, clever plot twists and plenty of surprises, “Murder on the Polar Express” is a must-see holiday spectacle.
