Metro Atlanta schools closing due to winter weather on Friday

School districts around metro Atlanta are closing ahead of the predicted winter weather on Friday, with some schools switching to remote work.

The National Weather Service Atlanta has issued a winter storm warning for the northern half of Georgia, predicting snowfall early Friday morning and ice accumulation through Saturday. State and local authorities are warning motorists to stay off roads. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency on Thursday in preparation for the storm.

Atlanta Public Schools will be closed on Friday, and schools are sharing academic plans with families for that day. Extracurriculars are also canceled on Friday and Saturday, and district employees are working remotely on Friday.



APS families can also visit apscares.findhelp.com to find financial assistance, food pantries, medical services and other resources.

Schools and facilities for Cherokee County Schools will be closed Friday and Saturday.

Clayton County Schools are closed completely on Friday. Employees will not work on that day and students have the option of learning asynchronously.

Cobb County Schools will close both their schools and facilities on Friday, with extracurricular activities canceled Friday and Saturday. 

Coweta County Schools and offices will be closed on Friday, with extracurricular activities canceled on Friday and Saturday.

City Schools of Decatur are closed on Friday, and after-school activities are canceled Friday and Saturday.

DeKalb County Schools will hold an independent learning day on Friday for students, with a remote workday for staff.

Douglas County Schools are closed on Friday, and students will complete classwork digitally. All in-person events are canceled.

Fayette County Schools and offices will be closed Friday, with all extracurricular activities scheduled for Friday and Saturday canceled. 

Both Fulton County Schools and Forsyth County Schools will hold a remote learning day on Friday, with schools and facilities closed. 

For Gwinnett County Public Schools, Friday will be a remote learning day for students, and all events, meal deliveries and activities are canceled that day. School and central office staff will work remotely, but administrative offices and the Instructional Support Center will be closed.

Henry County Schools are closed Friday, and school activities on Friday and over the weekend are canceled. Most employees will also not be working.

Jackson County Schools are closed Friday, with all extracurricular events scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11 postponed at a later date. 

Marietta City Schools are closed on Friday, with extracurricular activities on both Friday and Saturday canceled. The school system will hand out packaged breakfast and lunch meals to students at the end of the day.

Rockdale County Schools will hold an independent learning day for students on Friday.
