The Ukrainian community is closely watching the international political landscape as the war with Russia continues. Some Ukrainians in the U.S. hold hope that a new American administration, led by President-elect Donald Trump, could bring fresh momentum to peace talks or a potential ceasefire. However, opinions are divided, with many fearing that negotiations could lead to unfair compromises for Ukraine.
Tetiana Lendiel is a dual citizen of Ukraine and the United States who said the majority of her family continues to reside in her home country. She’s a member of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America and returned to “All Things Considered” to give an update on how the Ukrainians she’s in communication with are faring and how she perceives the effect of a second Trump administration.
Lendiel said some Ukrainians remember Trump’s earlier support for military aid to Ukraine, and some believe his business background may help broker a deal. However, many remain wary that any negotiations with Russia might pressure Ukraine into unfavorable concessions, particularly concerning its occupied territories.
