Georgia Democratic Party Chair Talks 2020 Strategy And More

State Sen. Nikema Williams (District 39) and chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia joined “Closer Look” Wednesday.

Georgia Democratic Party Chair Sen. Nikema Williams joined “Closer Look” Wednesday to discuss the party’s strategy for 2020, the state’s controversial abortion law and working to increase diversity.

When speaking about Gov. Brian Kemp signing the abortion bill, HB 481, into law, Williams (District 39) said those in the film and TV industry who have threatened to leave the state over the abortion law should stay.

“I say come to Georgia — come to Georgia and let’s fight. Let’s make sure we’re investing in elected officials,” Williams said. “We want to continue to grow a diverse culture here in our state and we need people to continue to fight with us.”

Meanwhile, a Gallup poll, released earlier this year, finds that both parties could be losing members from their base as more voters identify as Independents. Gallup found that 42% of voters identify as independent, while 30% identify as Democrats and 26% as Republicans.

So what can the Democratic Party do to increase it base heading into the 2020 election, and what will those efforts look like here in Georgia?

Williams said it’s important for the Democratic party to not focus solely on national issues, but also continuing to listen to local concerns.

“We’re not just focused on what is happening in Washington, D.C.,” Williams said. “We’ re going to door to door, neighborhood by neighborhood and talking directly to voters, so voters are telling us what issues rise up and what’s important to them.”
