Census Data: One Georgia County Has The Fastest Growing Asian Population In The U.S.

Forsyth has the fastest growing Asian population in the nation for a county with a general population of 20,000 or more, according to Census estimates.

The Census Bureau released it’s 2018 population estimates Thursday, and the country is getting older and more diverse.

Georgia is no different. The median age in Georgia went from 35.3 to 36.9. This was because a majority of counties in Georgia had a median age of 30 or lower compared to the nation where a majority of counties had a median age that was 40 or higher.

And while Georgia is younger than the national average, Luke Rogers, Chief of the Population Estimates Branch at the Census Bureau says Georgia’s population is aging more rapidly. This is in large part because of the baby-boomer generation.

“Now half the U.S. population is over the age of 38.2,” Rogers said in the report.

One county in Atlanta got a special shout-out. The report notes that Forsyth has the fastest growing Asian population in the nation for a county with a general population of 20,000 or more.

While the increase in the Asian population from 2017 to 2018 was only by 3,734 people, this measure looks at the percent increase. Rogers said that from 2010 to 2018 Forsyth County’s Asian population grew by 198.6 percent. This is especially remarkable when compared to somewhere like the Atlanta metro where the Asian population only grew by 43 percent.

Rogers said they release population estimates for the nation, states, counties, and also for sub-county areas and housing units annually as part of the population estimates program. These estimates serve as the official estimates of the United States between decennial censuses.

This information is used for federal funding allocation and further research. The next census count will take place in 2020.
