In 1977, The New Yorker published a feature about artist Romare Bearden. That magazine profile was written by renowned art critic Calvin Tomkins.
Tomkins’ work inspired Bearden to create dozens of collages, looking back on his life as a boy and as a young artist in the 1920s and ’30s.
It’s been nearly four decades since the Bearden’s Profile series were shown in New York City. Now, those works are on display again at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art. The exhibit is called “Something Over Something Else.”
