When Walt Disney wanted to visualize his animated films, he developed a method of drawing each individual scene, called storyboarding. It’s kind of like a picture book of the entire film– a very long, detailed picture book.
For Pixar’s new animated feature, ONWARD, almost 100,000 scenes were sketched for the first draft of the film’s storyboard.
Kelsey Mann is the artist who was head of story for ONWARD. On a recent press tour, he spoke with City Lights senior producer, Claire Reynolds, and explained how Pixar’s story artists create magic onscreen.
ONWARD’s story is of two elf brothers, played by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, who go on a quest to bring their father back to life for one day.
