The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting businesses across every industry, along with workers on the front lines, including healthcare workers, grocery store employees, and sanitation crews.

A few weeks ago, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced a hazard pay policy that would pay eligible front-line city employees $500 per month during the coronavirus pandemic.

More than 5,000 city employees would qualify for hazard pay under the new policy.  Several positions meet the qualifications for hazard pay. They include sworn public safety positions and civilians performing critical watershed, aviation, solid waste, transportation, inspection, parks and recreation, and other frontline functions.

Gayla Dodson, project management officer for the Department of Public Works Office of Solid Waste Services, recently joined “Closer Look” to discuss hazard pay for sanitation crews. She also discussed how the Office of Solid Waste Services is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and the precautions Atlanta residents should take for trash pickups if they have been exposed to the virus.
