Water is now flowing into the City of Atlanta’s new emergency reservoir.

Bellwood Quarry is a giant old granite quarry just west of downtown. It’s been used in movies and TV shows, including Stranger Things, the Walking Dead and the Hunger Games.

The Department of Watershed Management used a giant, custom-built drill, nicknamed Driller Mike, to dig 5 miles to connect the quarry with the Chattahoochee River.

Bellwood Quarry will eventually hold 2.4 billion gallons of water, according to Watershed, taking the city’s backup water supply from enough to last 3 to 5 days, to enough to last a month or more.

The area around it is being developed into what will eventually be the city’s biggest park.
