Early voting began Tuesday in the special election for Georgia’s 5th Congressional District.

The winner will fill the seat of the late Civil Rights legend Rep. John Lewis for the remainder of the year.

Barrington Martin is the youngest of seven vying to fill the unexpired term. He’s a 32-year-old special-education teacher. His name may sound a little familiar.

Martin ran against Lewis in the June 9th Primary and suffered a huge loss.

But Martin said, win or lose, he will always fight for the district where he grew up.

“The 5th District essentially is my home. It’s the place that cultivated me, Raised me. And inspired me to be the man that i am today,” he said. “I have a distict responsibility to make sure it is taken care of in the future.”

Martin explained his platform.

“My entire platform is called The People’s Bailout. We’ve seen in politics for too long now that any time of major crisis or disaster happens, the very first thing that happens is that the government always bail out corporations. But with me, that’s going to change. With me, the people will be bailed out. My platform possesses the foundation on universal healthcare, in conjunction with universal guaranteed income. Student loan forgiveness. Equity education. Criminal justice reform. Possessing a platform like this will not only change the district but it will create a better nation for us all. ”

Martin added he is humbled and is running on the shoulders of the late John Lewis.

If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, a runoff will take place on Dec. 1, just a few weeks before the term expires.
