Season three of WABE’s podcast, “Buried Truths,” examines a case that struck a nerve in Georgia as well as the rest of the country.
Ahmaud Arbery, a young Black man, was out for a jog in a neighborhood in Glynn County, Georgia. He never made it home. Arbery was chased down by two white men and shot to death.
“Morning Edition” host Lisa Rayam talks with “Buried Truths” host and Emory University professor of practice in English and creative writing Hank Klibanoff, who says he set out to find how something like this could still happen. Klibanoff is a veteran journalist, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and a Peabody Award-winning podcast host. He also directs the Georgia Civil Rights Cold Cases Project at Emory.
“There are too many echoes of these old cases that are showing up in the Ahmaud Arbery case,” Klibanoff said.
Attorneys for the father and son charged with killing Arbery say their clients weren’t motivated by race when they armed themselves, chased Arbery in a truck, and shot him in the street after a confrontation. Gregory and Travis McMichael have been jailed since their arrest.
