Clarkston’s newly elected mayor is a political trailblazer.
Mayor Beverly H. Burks, who was sworn into office on her birthday, Nov. 30, is the first Black and first woman mayor to lead the city in its 138-year history.
On Monday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Burks talked with show host Rose Scott about her adulation for the city known as the most diverse square mile in America.
“We have people from over 50 different countries and six different continents, but it is an inviting place, it’s a welcoming place, it’s a place where possibilities can grow and—it’s a place where if you want to see true diversity that’s where you need to come,” said Burks.
During the conversation, Burks reflected on her time serving as a councilwoman for Clarkston, beating breast cancer, losing the Clarkston mayoral race in 2017, and discussed what led her to run for office this year after former Mayor Terry Turner vacated the seat.
